Board Certified Ophthalmologist in Southeast Idaho

Robert R. Jones, M.D., did his undergraduate work at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in premedical studies. He attended medical school at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, where he was elected into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and received the Lange Medical Publications Award for outstanding achievement. He completed an internship in internal medicine/emergency medicine at the University of Utah Affiliated Hospitals in Salt Lake City and is thus a fully qualified general practitioner of medicine. Dr Jones then completed an extensive residency in surgery and diseases of the eye at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In his final year at Mayo, he served as chief resident of the Department of Ophthalmology. He is a board-certified diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and maintains this distinction through formal recertification, which involves many hours of continuing medical education as well as passing board recertification examinations and office record reviews. His most recent recertification was completed in December of 2023.

Dr. Jones has performed cataract surgery with intraocular lens implants and laser vision correction (LASIK) on many physicians and healthcare professionals, as well as professional basketball players, family members, friends, and office staff. On July 11, 2000, he performed the first live televised surgical operation in Southeast Idaho when he did the LASIK procedure on Dr. Curt Galke during the 5:00 news. Dr. Galke was the host of the weekly local N.B.C. television program "Ask the Doc" at that time.

Dr. Jones has done research and authored publications on corneal and cataract surgery and nerve regeneration following ocular surgery and injury. He is currently an ophthalmology instructor for physicians from the I.S.U. Family Practice Residency Program and medical students from the University of Washington. He gives lectures to physicians and various groups on various ophthalmology topics. His services include general ophthalmic surgery including cataract and intraocular lens surgery, LASIK, and plastic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids and diagnosis and management of eye disease including glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. 

Dr. Jones grew up in Southeast Idaho and attended Skyline High School in Idaho Falls. He enjoys spending time with his family and all activities related to health, fitness, and the great outdoors.
